Quo Vadis, Domine?

As is known, the mystical basis of the Christian religion was the impression made by the appearance of the "risen rabbi" before his disciples. However that mysterious event can also be given a simple and natural explanation.

As said in the Gospels, there was some preacher who called himself a Jesus of Nazareth, wandered around Judea with his disciples, preached the ideas of Zoroastrianism, such as "coming resurrection" and "purifying fire", and caused irritation of wealthy Jews, directing his sermons against them. He was captured by Jews under very mysterious circumstances: near the sleeping disciples in the garden. Then, at the insistence of the Sanhedrin, he was crucified by procurator of Judea. But on the third day after the death, his body disappeared. Later on the rabbi appeared before his disciples alive. Seeing him alive, some of the disciples believed in what he was the very man who was crucified, "but some doubted" (Gospel of Matthew).

Why did some doubt? The point is that the disciples really saw a poor man looking like their rabbi from a distance, but they had no occasion to recognize him for sure, because some Joseph of Arimathaea, a wealthy Jew, "bought a linen cloth, and taking him down, wound him in the linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb which had been cut out of a rock. He rolled a stone against the door of the tomb" (Gospel of Mark).

For comprehension of Gospel events take into consideration the following:

1) Jews, who fancied themselves, but were one of the "barbarian peoples", sought to get rid of the Roman containment to build up a "Great Israel".

2) Since their armies were defeated in the imperialist war with Babylonia, Jews for a long time were waiting for the messiah from their tribal god Yahweh, "Lord of Hosts".

3) In the Hellenic world, there was the holy day "tragos ode", a ritual procession of "Dionysus" surrounded "satyrs", to the Temple of Zeus. There "Dionysus died", as being mortal, but "was risen" by "Zeus", his father, as being immortal.

So, suppose that a certain group of "Elders of Zion" planning an armed uprising against the presence of Roman legions in Judea, came to the idea to prepare a "messiah", so that at the right time "to reveal him to Israel."

To this end, the initial project (the scheme "lamb"), whose meaning was to select a suitable "lamb" for the slaughter, was involved. This "lamb" was to have a given look. It is this look was at a simple carpenter Jesus of Nazareth, who came among others to be baptized in the Jordan, or just stare and listen to John the Baptist: "The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said: Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world" (Gospel of John).

Since that time, entered into force on the base project (the scheme "tragos ode"): pretending to be a simple carpenter Jesus of Nazareth, a certain well educated Jew travels to Judea with his disciples, and then appeared before his disciples as a risen after the crucifixion. The real carpenter Jesus of Nazareth, until then concealed, appears again at a key point of this story, near the sleeping disciples in the garden at the oil mill.

So, the events described in the Gospels embodied the following two ideas taken from the Jewish mythology:

1) John the Baptist, a descendant of Aaron, the biblical high priest, performed the ritual of selecting a suitable "lamb" for the slaughter.

2) Before slaughter, the potential "messiah" was replaced by the "lamb", just as in the famous case, "Abraham went and took the ram and offered it as a burnt offering instead of his son."

Did you know that God doesn't want you to be walked all over? (Answers: 21) (Comments: 0)
In fact, if you belong to Him, you are royalty and His own precious child. Check this out and tell me if I am correct. Isaiah 51:22-23 through 52:1-2: 22 This is what your Sovereign LORD says, your God, who defends his people: "See, I have taken out of your hand the cup that made you stagger; from that cup, the goblet of my wrath, you will never drink again. 23 I will put it into the hands of your tormentors, who said to you, 'Fall prostrate that we may walk over you.' And you made your back like the ground, like a street to be walked over." 1 Awake, awake, O Zion, clothe yourself with strength. Put on your garments of splendor, O Jerusalem, the holy city. The uncircumcised and defiled will not enter you again. 2 Shake off your dust; rise up, sit enthroned, O Jerusalem. Free yourself from the chains on your neck, O captive Daughter of Zion. Way, Good verse. Almost would make you think Jesus intends us to be walked all over. We are not to return evil with evil. But does that really mean God wants us to be a doormat? This passage sure sounds like they were being treated as a doormat and God is telling them to rise up and sit enthroned in the position He placed them. I agree Glow. I live this way too. But there comes a point where God says "No". I lived in an abusive relationship, submitting to an ungodly man. God showed me this scripture, and made me stand up. I am STILL dealing with this. I walk in forgiveness and willing to give myself freely, but GIVING is not the same as being walked on. Don't you think? I know this is a tricky question. You are right. The previous answerers who said likewise are right, BUT I am seeing that there is a time to stand up to evil or to someone who just wants to control you. I agree Glow. I live this way too. Study of Matthew 4:5. Can you help with any relevant scriptures or comments ? (Answers: 4) (Comments: 0)
Matthew 4:5.....Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. See Nehemiah 1:11....Now the leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of every ten to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, while the remaining nine were to stay in their own towns. Also Isa 52:1.... Awake, awake, O Zion, clothe yourself with strength. Put on your garments of splendor, O Jerusalem, the holy city. The uncircumcised and defiled will not enter you again. And Matt 27:53....They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people. Other cross ref scriptures ...Lu 4:9, Joh 19:11, Isa 48:2, 52:1, Da 9:16 & Re 11:2 Notes 1.The holy city - So Jerusalem was commonly called, being the place God had peculiarly chosen for himself. On the battlement of the temple - Probably over the king's gallery, which was of such a prodigious height, that no one could look down from the top of it without making himself giddy 2.In the N.T. one Greek word, hagios, in its various forms, is rendered, "holy," "holiness," "sanctify," "sanctified," "sanctification." Like the heb. qodesh, it signifies "set apart for God." 3. If the Holy Spirit witness to our being adopted as children of God, that will answer all the suggestions of the evil spirit. Christ was directed to the combat. If we presume upon our own strength, and tempt the devil to tempt us, we provoke God to leave us to ourselves. Others are tempted, when drawn aside of their own lust, and enticed, Jas 1:14; but our Lord Jesus had no corrupt nature, therefore he was tempted only by the devil. In the temptation of Christ it appears that our enemy is subtle, spiteful, and very daring; but he can be resisted. It is a comfort to us that Christ suffered, being tempted; for thus it appears that our temptations, if not yielded to, are not sins, they are afflictions only. Satan aimed in all his temptations, to bring Christ to sin against God. Can you tie in Ne 11:1 , Isa 52:1 &/or Matt 17:53 with Matt 4:5 ? Do you agree with the notes , why/why not ? Have i missed any points ? Can you add relevent scriptures ? What do you think or understand about Matthew 4:5 ? Can you add relevent comments ? Radarrec. Question is really a general question about Matt4:5 , any relevent comments you wish to make are welcome. I guess i did focus a bit on the temple & get away a bit from the temptation . I think i covered a little more in the previous scriptures . That is the point of this exercise for all to bring out the points & talk about it.
